Tutor Group Information

Every student belongs to a tutor group, which provides daily support and is often the first place students go with any questions or concerns.

  • Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9):
    • 9 tutor groups per year
    • Tutors are students' first point of contact each morning
  • Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11):
    • 10 tutor groups per year
    • Structured to support with work experience preparation, academic mentoring, and individual guidance

Tutors play a central role in pastoral care, building strong relationships with students and families, and monitoring both academic progress and wellbeing.

Tutor Time Curriculum

Our tutor programme is designed to support students holistically, combining personal development, literacy, oracy, and future planning. Sessions are carefully structured and age-appropriate, helping students grow into confident, informed, and thoughtful young adults.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)
  • The Great Debate: Weekly oracy-based sessions that develop speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills through discussion of current and thought-provoking topics.
  • Collective Tutor Reading: A shared reading experience that supports literacy and promotes a love of reading.
  • Weekly Assembly: A collective gathering for important messages, celebrations, and key calendar events. Assemblies reflect our shared values and are inclusive of all.
  • Year 7 – Compass Sessions: Designed specifically for transition into secondary school, these sessions use the Valor Compass framework to help students explore themes such as:
    • Self-worth
    • Responsibility
    • Community
    • Aspiration

These sessions support students in building confidence, making friendships, and settling into secondary life.

Year 10 – Future Focus

In addition to collective reading and assembly in Year 10, students take part in Future Focus sessions tailored to support:

  • Preparation for work experience placements
  • Careers education and guidance
  • Post-16 planning
  • Study skills and personal development
Year 11 – Acceleration & Accelerate You

In Year 11, tutor time becomes more targeted to support academic success and student wellbeing:

  • Acceleration Sessions: Targeted English, Maths, or Science sessions based on individual need and current progress.
  • Accelerate You: A wellbeing-focused session supporting students to manage the pressures of Year 11 and develop strategies for staying healthy, focused, and resilient – now and in the future.
  • Weekly Assembly: Celebrates success, shares key information, and supports personal development as students prepare for exams and life beyond school.

Assemblies: A Collective Experience

Our weekly assemblies for all year groups offer a shared experience that:

  • Reinforces key values and school culture
  • Highlights local, national, and global events
  • Offers students the chance to hear from a range of guest speakers, including visitors from higher education, industry, and the wider community
  • Introduces important Labour Market Information (LMI) to support future planning

Assemblies are carefully mapped across the year to include and celebrate significant national events and awareness days such as:

  • Remembrance Day
  • World Mental Health Day
  • Holocaust Memorial Day
  • Pride Month
  • Black History Month
  • Safer Internet Day
  • World Book Day
  • And more

This ensures students receive a rich, relevant, and inclusive experience that deepens their understanding of the world and their place within it.
