Work Experience

At Bodmin College, we want our students to live a life full of ambition and opportunity. To help achieve this, all students will take part in a work experience placement, giving them the chance to explore future career pathways and gain a real-life understanding of the world of work.

Work experience will take place from Monday 20th July to Friday 24th July, during the final week of the summer term.

Students are encouraged to “find a placement for those five days that could be the first step towards where you want to be in five years.”

Finding a placement

Students should locate a placement before registering it, using:

  • The Veryan website
  • Google searches
  • Word of mouth (family, friends, local employers)

Once a potential placement has been identified, students should contact the placement provider via email, using appropriate and formal language.

Students have already been emailed a link to the Veryan website along with instructions on how to use it. Parents and carers can also use this website to support their child in finding a placement.

After securing a placement

Once a placement has been secured, students must inform their tutor, who will then provide the required form. This form must be completed by both the student and the employer.

Key deadlines:

Placement secured by: Friday 9th January 2026

Completed forms submitted by: Friday 13th February 2026

Support available

It is part of government guidance that all students in KS4 have access to a workplace experience. The more meaningful the experience, the more informed students will be about their future options. Work experience helps students understand the demands, expectations, and responsibilities of a workplace beyond school.

Students should be reassured that support is available. If they are genuinely struggling to come up with an idea or secure a placement, please direct them as early as possible to one of the following members of staff:

Their Form Tutor

  • Miss Jefferson
  • Mr Underhill
  • Miss Thomas
  • Miss Taylor

The sooner we are made aware, the sooner we can put the right support in place to help every student succeed.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students prepare for their futures.

Case Studies

Emma – Veterinary Practice
"My placement at a local veterinary surgery was amazing. I learned how to care for animals properly and even got to help with check-ups. It showed me how much responsibility comes with the job and confirmed that I’d love to work in animal care in the future."

Josh - Construction Company
"I spent my week with a construction team and got to see different parts of a building project. I enjoyed learning practical skills and working as part of a team. It gave me a much clearer idea of what apprenticeships in construction could look like."

Mia – Primary School
"I really enjoyed my work experience in a primary school. The staff were welcoming, and I helped run small group activities with the children. It made me realise how rewarding teaching can be and has inspired me to think about a career in education."
