Bodmin College widens opportunities for students to study for a Degree level qualification

Students in Cornwall can now study locally for a degree qualification through Bodmin College, which has recently been through a ground-breaking partnership with Falmouth University.

“This is such a momentous occasion for everyone involved – we are all absolutely delighted to be able to offer this incredible opportunity for students in Bodmin and throughout the county” commented Mark Talbot, BA (Hons) and FdA Digital Media, Course Leader. “We couldn’t be prouder to now offer a Degree-level education right here in Bodmin. It has taken years of hard work from our school community so achieving the accolade is just fantastic. It is the first of its kind in the South West.”

At present, students can study for a 2-year Foundation Degree in Digital Media at the bespoke Woods Browning campus at Bodmin College. Now – a new level-6 course has been developed as a progression of the existing foundation course, so students can choose to continue their studies with a one-year BA (Hons) top-up to achieve a full Degree in Digital Media, validated by Falmouth University.

“It has always been our mission to develop further higher education provision to support the prospects of low income and low aspiration students” commented Mr Talbot. “Going away to University isn’t an option for a lot of young people, but now we can offer an alternative option. Our new top-up BA (Hons) qualification widens opportunities and access for students from the most deprived backgrounds in Bodmin and throughout the county.”

Mr Talbot continued, “It’s a very exciting time for the town – our new Degree opportunity will not only keep and attract talent, but we’ll be able to offer incredible opportunities for collaboration and make Bodmin a hotbed of creative talent and innovation. There’s potential for huge social and economic impact on the area. Falmouth University is one of the most revered and respected Universities in the country so it’s incredible to be in partnership and have them on board.”

BA (Hons) Digital Media combines creative, critical and digital craft skills for students looking to develop a career in different media industries including digital photography, digital advertising, screenwriting, graphic design, blogging, social media, journalism and film production – to name a selection.

“We are very proud of the achievement of many of our FdA students who would not have undertaken undergraduate study if it had not been for its availability and course delivery in our community” commented Mr Talbot. “To go one step further and offer a Degree for individuals who wouldn’t have even considered University is just fantastic.”

“It will be a small, supportive and immersive learning experience for students. Not only that, we’re hoping to attract a mix of ages to create a melting pot of collective experience between the generations” commented Mr Talbot. “Our small-scale offering means we can offer our cohort incredible collaboration opportunities with industry experts and mentors, guest speakers and work placements which will be invaluable as they enter the creative industries.”

The one-year, full-time top-up BA (Hons) will be delivered by Course Leader Mark Talbot and Digital Media Tutor Jessica Hill, with a selection of guest lecturers and mentors including TV personality James Strawbridge, writer and director Brett Harvey and filmmaker John Freddy Jones. Students will benefit from a combination of lectures, seminars, technical workshops and one-to-one tutorials.

“We are offering higher education to students who wouldn’t have even thought about it before. That’s so important and very rewarding.”

The average annual cost of a degree in the UK costs £9,188. The new BA (Hons) Digital Media course in Bodmin costs £7,500 per academic year.

Jamie Hanson, Chief External Examiner, School of Communication Design (2019) commented, “I am very pleased to hear that a level 6 ‘Top-up’ course will be starting at Bodmin College in September 2020, validated through Falmouth University. It will provide a natural progression route for current and graduate students of the FdA Digital Media course. It’s absolutely fantastic to offer degree provision to students in Bodmin – offering flexibility and support for students who may not have even considered going to University.”

Subject to approval, the degree will be available in Bodmin from September 2020.

“We are very proud to be able to offer the life-changing opportunity to study a Degree, to all students, from all backgrounds. Bodmin College has always been – and continues to be – an inclusive and all-embracing institution that champions individual achievement. We aim to provide educational practices which allow all students to have an equal opportunity to thrive” added Mr Talbot.
