Literacy is not just something you have to learn and use in English lessons. Literacy is the language of learning in every subject; in every lesson you have to read and discuss subject specific information before writing in a way that demonstrates your learning and critical understanding.

Each subject area may have slightly different literacy requirements in terms of terminology and writing style because to access top grades in each subject you will need to think and write like an expert in that field. For example, “A teacher of science, has a responsibility to help pupils learn about science, but they also have a responsibility to help them, speak, listen and write like a scientist,” (Bromley, 2017).

To help you, this area of the college website has been created by Literacy Champions from each department to help support your literacy skills development across the curriculum.
