RE: Detailed Guidance for Parents – September Reopening Years 7-11

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well. I last wrote to you on 15th July with outline information about how we would be reopening Bodmin College for all students in September. I am now writing with more detailed information to help you and your child prepare for the start of the new term.

Blended Learning Offer – Fortnightly Remote/In-School Provision

Despite the protection measures in place, these are strange times and we are aware that many families have concerns regarding returning to school so in addition to full-opening, we are offering parents the option of a fortnightly rotation that would comprise of 1-week in school, 1-week remote supported learning. This is a flexible approach that parents can opt in or out of and will be reviewed at half term

The smaller class sizes achieved by offering this would allow for:

  • Reduced risk of transmission
  • More individualised feedback
  • Opportunity to develop independent learning skills for the future but with regular teacher support.
  • Reduced travel risk, cost and environmental impact.

Following the introduction of MSTeams we have worked hard to develop the quality and effectiveness of our remote learning provision. All lessons will be available via SatchelOne so the resources online will mirror the resources used in school.

All students will be required to attend the first day for their year group in order to receive the same introduction to the new arrangements. From the next day onwards, students taking up the offer and with surname A-L should attend during week 1, students with surname M-Z should attend during week 2. This would not affect a student’s attendance record providing they engage appropriately with their remote lessons.

Where fortnightly remote-learning is not possible (due to family/work commitments or otherwise) or where fortnightly remote-learning would not be in the students’ best interests, normal full-time schooling will be in place and available for all students. Engagement with the remote learning provision will be monitored and where there are concerns, a student would be required to resume full time attendance in-school immediately.

Arrangements For The First Day

You will already be aware that we are staggering the start of the term for different year groups in order to allow us to dedicate time for introducing students to the changes and new arrangements in place to keep them safe. The bold shows each year group’s first day.

  • Friday 4th September 2020 – Year 7 and 12 only
  • Monday 7th September 2020 – Year 7, 11, 12 and 13
  • Tuesday 8th September 2020 – Year 7, 9, 11, 12 and 13
  • Wednesday 9th September 2020– Year 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13

All students should attend their allocated first day even if they are opting for the blended learning approach. The first day will consist of an extended tutor time and an assembly streamed to their classroom to ensure that all students have time to familiarise themselves with the new routines and ask any questions they may have.

Travelling To And Arriving At School

It is essential that no child attends College if they or any member of their household is exhibiting Covid19 Symptoms. These include new, persistent cough, fever, loss or smell/taste. If your child or anyone in your household experiences these symptoms, you must contact NHS111 immediately and follow the advice on testing and self-isolating. Please also keep us informed by contacting the attendance office.

Students should travel to school in conjunction with the government guidance on safer travel.

  • Avoid mixing bubbles – students should ONLY travel independently or with students from the same year group or household. They should not travel with students from other year group bubbles unless they are in the same household.
  • Walk, cycle, scoot or drive if possible – if walking, cycling or scootering, students should observe safe highway code. Cycles and scooters should be in good working order, with a padlock and a helmet should be worn.
  • Car sharing should be avoided – if unavoidable, please follow the government advice above.
  • Buses will be running as normal but face-coverings must be worn and students should wait and be seated with students from the same year group with youngest years at the front and oldest at the back. Click here for further information from Cornwall Council.

On arrival at school students must sanitise their hands and go straight to their allocated year group area as shown below. Sanitising/washing stations will be available. In case of wet weather, staff will direct students to an allocated wet weather area.

*YEAR 7 ONLY – To support students on their very first day, YEAR 7 should go to the Sports Hall on Friday 4th Sept where they will be met by their tutors. From Monday 7th Sept, they should follow the arrangements below.

We respectfully ask that parents do not wait around entrances or accompany their child onto site during drop off or pick up times. Please observe 2m distancing.

Arrangements for Lessons

We have made every effort to ensure that the breadth, depth and quality of curriculum and the learning experience remains at its highest despite the restrictions, however, in order to ensure safety we have had to make some procedural changes.

To control movement and minimise mixing of year group bubbles, we have made minor adjustments to the timing of some lessons but this will have a minimal effect on the overall school day. Where LZ3 finishes slightly earlier, students are free to depart or wait in their allocated arrival/departure area until 3:30.

Movement to and from lessons will be staggered and controlled by staff supervision. Coloured routes will be in place in certain areas to prevent year group bubbles from mixing.

Social distancing in classrooms will be extremely difficult to achieve so in order to minimise the risk of virus transmission the following arrangements are in place:

  • NEW! Fortnightly blended learning offer to reduce class sizes whilst still ensuring quality of learning.
  • Seating plans to reduce mixing in class. Wherever possible, desks will face forwards to avoid time spent face-to-face. Teachers will remain at the front of the class.
  • Sanitiser units in every classroom along with paper-towels and cleaning spray for desks/chairs. Tissues and bins will also be available in every classroom for catch it-kill it – bin it. Students will be taught safe hygiene habits.
  • NEW! Students are encouraged to wear face-coverings in corridors, communal areas and in classrooms where it doesn’t inhibit learning. Students will be taught how to use them safely. Staff will be provided with visors and may also wear face-coverings where it does not inhibit teaching. Face coverings may be plain or patterned, shop-bought or home-made but must be appropriate for school with no offensive designs. For environmental reasons we would discourage disposal face-coverings and recommend at least 2 face-coverings to allow regularly washing. The following links may be useful:
  • Sharing of books and equipment is discouraged. Students must bring their own stationary as per the equipment list. All equipment that has to be shared will be cleaned between uses. Where possible, equipment will also be quarantined or kept for the sole use of single year group bubbles.
  • Doors and windows will be open where it is safe and appropriate to do so.
  • Extra cleaning staff ensuring regular cleaning of shared surfaces throughout the day.

Arrangements For Break & Lunchtimes

We will continue to provide a healthy selection of hot and cold menu choices. Each year group will have a designated canteen area and separate designated access time. One way systems are in place along with sanitising stations and queuing systems. Each canteen will be fully cleaned between year groups. Furniture has been reduced to create more space and reduce risk of surface contamination.

We would encourage parents to use the cashless parent-pay system to replenish student accounts. Payment points will be cleaned between each use.

Each year group has their own designated outdoor social area with wet weather areas available if required. Unfortunately, due to Covid19 restrictions ball games will no longer be permitted at this time.

End times are slightly staggered to prevent mixing of year groups. Year 7-9 students may depart at the end of LZ3 or wait in their allocated departure area until 3.30pm. Year 7-9 students using the buses will be escorted to the bus bay and boarding will be supervised.

Years 10-13 all finish at 3.30 and should make their way home appropriately without mixing bubbles.

A limited selection of after-school activities (including detentions) will be available where it is possible to keep bubbles separate. Further information about these will follow.

Visitors strictly by appointment only – We regret that we are unable to accommodate visitors without a prior appointment at this time. If you wish to meet with any member of school staff, please make an appointment.

Lockers will be unavailable at this time, therefore we advise that students bring essential school items only.

If your child is sensitive to sanitizer or has allergies that might affect them, parents are invited to provide their child with a suitable alternative.

Academic and Pastoral support are, as always, of utmost importance. We have extra support in place and students can access this through the usual means.

Attendance expectations are as normal. Whilst we understand that it is a worrying time, a child’s education is immeasurably valuable. Our blended learning approach is available to support families but we do expect all students to be accessing full-time education whether in person or through our blended learning approach.

Marking of books and homework will be strictly controlled. Teachers will follow stringent hygiene procedures prior to handling books and where possible, books may be quarantined for 72 hours.

Intervention support and detentions. In order to support students learning and development effectively, we will continue to hold small group interventions across year group bubbles on a needs basis. Where this is required, additional precautions will be in place such as social distancing and/or screens.
