ABOUT WILLIAM CLIFT
William Clift was born in Bodmin in 1775 into extreme poverty, one of seven children whose father died when he was very young.
He attended Bodmin School and as a result of his drawing ability, combined with support from a local philanthropist, Clift went on to dissect, draw and finally curate at the Hunterian Museum at the Royal Society of Surgeons. Clift was made a fellow of the Royal Society in 1823.
William Clift represents the desire to achieve in spite of problems, he had a passion for drawing combined with scientific curiosity and with help from Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert, Clift was able to achieve great success.
Bodmin College offers numerous opportunities for our gifted students to access competitive courses and careers. We have called this the William Clift Academy. Click here to read what the Cornish Guardian said about the Academy.
The William Clift Academy reflects the aspiration that we want our young people to have but also the extra help and encouragement that could make all the difference to our students achieving their goals.
